The number of CCNA R&S and CCNP exams introduced since Cisco’s inception in 1988 have always been focused on the so-called service provider market, with the most common applications being voice and video transport. The fact that today (July 2016) we are even looking at two brand new CCNA and CCNP titles, albeit designed for this era of ‘telco’ services, is certainly a sign of the broader evolution of technology and business. The CCNA R&S tracks out of which this article refers to, will also continue to be based around ‘classic’ telco services, but the title will be augmented with a change to the title to make it ‘Routing and Switching’ (and associated) so as to better reflect the dynamics of network design, and in this case networking in general.
The CCNP R&S title track, which will form the basis for both the 2017-18 version of the CCNA R&S title and the new CCNA R&S title itself, will also continue to be based on the classic telco services model, with the most common service applications being Broadband and VoIP/Video.
CCNA and CCNP Concentric NetOps
At the heart of each of these tracks is the ability to work within the context of a telecommunication network, where network dynamics and requirements can be expressed and defined. This ability to express ‘networks’ is the point at which one can differentiate and place these tracks alongside such venerable titles as the Security+ and the Security+R titles. These tracks are all based on the thought of the realisation and management of network devices.
CCNA R&S is all about understanding how networking components inter-relate, while CCNP R&S is all about ensuring the communication between those components and other functions of the infrastructure (Ethernet switches, for example) is configured, and configured correctly.
A networking related exam with an IT flavour is one which touches on the technical implementations of the subject (ie you are expected to understand the technology behind the subject), rather than what the subject ‘is’.
In this way, with either CCNA or CCNP R&S, it is not just a question of the vendor-supplied technology but how that technology is applied, and how that application is configured.
